Fasting and Praying for America – Nat’l Day of Prayer 2018

Every moment a follower of Christ spends praying and fasting is a mighty day in Heaven and on earth. Maximum spiritual power is turned on through fasting, Jesus revealed this secret in Matthew 17:21 and Mark 9:29 (“this kind only goes out by prayer and fasting“).

Today I will simply share how we prayed this morning in our home. It went something like this:

Father, we praise You. You are pure and great, big enough to handle any issue we bring with a mere thought. Thank You for loving us and hearing our concerns.

We bring the needs of our nation before You today. This is Your land, a land of refuge given to Your people, Israel of God. Please protect and strengthen Your chosen leaders for this time. Guide them in Your ways. Protect their families. Keep evil away from them.

Let attacks without cause on our leaders fall away to nothing. Let truth, conspiracies and perpetrators be revealed. Let no lie stand. Only the truth.

You kept Pharoah’s army away from Your people, Israel, by the uplifted arms of Your leader, Moses, and drowned their enemies in the sea. God make our prayers today as uplifted arms on behalf of our leaders and nation, and deliver us from the army that constantly wars against us.

Father, give our leaders wisdom and a way to guard our borders without turning away people in true need. We want to keep our arms open to the hurting, but prevent entrance to those with evil intentions.

Please deliver the innocent from wicked hands. Inspire our nation to value life.

Please stir Your people to holiness and make us a mighty army of faith, standing in the gap for our nation. We ask You stem the tide against us as long as You will it and place our nation in Your hands. We trust You.

In the precious name of Jesus our Savior,

Amen.

God bless everyone praying, and fasting, for America today, and God bless America!

How to Fast

[If you have a serious medical condition, please consult a doctor before fasting.]

For those new to fasting, please read through these few ideas I’ve learned over the years to make it an easier and better experience.

Make Your Peace With Hunger

First things first, prepare yourself mentally and make your peace with the fact that fasting means you will be hungry. Hunger pains are uncomfortable, but remember it is temporary and for a worthy purpose. Consider it your sacrifice of pleasure, in order to seek the Lord about something vitally important. Hunger is a necessary part of the process.

Know that the benefits of fasting are not just spiritual. The medical and health community has begun recognizing the physical benefits of fasting in recent decades. Among other things, it is actually very good for your brain!

Sunset to Sunset, a Simple Schedule

If you are fasting 24 hours, I suggest you fast from sunset one day to sunset the next. After the sun sets on the second day, have a light meal. This is a wonderful schedule and you never go to bed completely hungry.

Note, if you instead choose to fast one calendar day (i.e., skipping breakfast, lunch and dinner, and not eating until the next morning at breakfast), you are actually fasting something like 36 hours, not just 24. The sunset to sunset fast is shorter and less stressful on the body.

Pray During Mealtime

Whatever the length of your fast, spend the time you would normally spend at mealtimes in prayer and fellowship with the Lord. Read His Word. Talk to Him about the issue for which you are fasting, as well as for your needs. Pour out your heart to Him. Give Him praise for His blessings. Love on Him and in turn receive His love for you.

Be Charitable

Share the food you would normally eat with someone hungry. This is a principle right out of Isaiah 58. God wanted the Israelites to be charitable during the fast, to share their food with the hungry, to meet the needs of the poor.

If it is not possible to immediately find someone in need, then give something extra to charity during your fast. You are saving money and food by not eating, so share what you are saving with others. This is what God intended, and the blessings are immeasurable.

Live Normally

While fasting, dress normally, act normally, go to work or school. In a private fast, don’t announce to those outside your home you are fasting. The fast is between you and the Lord, a humble thing, not something to boast about for personal glory.

If you have a family, especially children, feed your family. Provide food for them as normal. Don’t ignore the needs of your house because you are fasting. This is also an instruction right out of Isaiah 58.

Bottom line, go about your life as normal during a fast. Do your chores, work or homework. Just spend meal times in prayer and give something extra, whether food or resources, to an individual in need or charity.

Types of Fast

Not every fast has to be where you take no food and no water. Certainly, that is one way, but there are other ways and I’ve seen God bless mightily through them also.

Solid food fast

In this fast, you avoid solid food, but still take liquids such as juice or tea. In my novice days of fasting, this was my most common method. It is a good beginning and still trains your body, preparing you for more rigorous fasting down the road.

For coffee drinkers, have your cup of tea or coffee in the morning to avoid a disruptive caffeine headache, but skip the sugar and cream. Remember, the point of fasting is to set aside your own pleasure to seek the mind and heart of God.

If you have physical issues where you become weak or ill without some nutrition, then adjust accordingly. If you feel you are going to faint, then take some juice or milk to sustain you through the fast. God is gracious and will still use your sacrifice of pleasure for His purposes. Baby steps.

Water only fast

This is the next step for those whose physical needs don’t prevent it. During this fast, you take nothing except water.

I know it sounds difficult, but from experience, it was no harder than taking juice or broth every day. In some ways, cutting out all except water seemed easier. I was surprised, but for an extended fast, my body adjusted more quickly to water only.

Use your judgment. God will honor every effort!

Conclusion

Prepare yourself mentally and choose the best schedule for you. Remember, the point of fasting is to set aside your comfort and pleasure to seek the Lord with your full focus. In my experience, it is amazing how not thinking of what food or beverages you are going to consume next changes your ability to focus on Him.

Make your fast fit your personal needs and the needs of others in your life. Meet your obligations at home and elsewhere, give what you are saving during the fast to someone in need or to charity.

The Lord will bless your efforts, and remember, He is gracious. Do what you can, but don’t push beyond what is reasonable. If you are becoming faint or ill, then stop the fast. If you are brand new to fasting, start slow and increase your fast the next time. Your body will adjust to it and you will find it easier when you know what to expect.

Above all, God bless you for daring to take this most precious and powerful step in your spiritual life! Enjoy your time with Him, and watch Him work in mighty ways in you as a result!

Prayer and FASTING on National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 3! Faith and Fasting friends, will you join me in not just praying, but also FASTING for our nation this Thursday?

Never in the history of our beautiful land have we needed more for the people of God to unite in prayer and fasting. Our President, White House staff, Cabinet members, House, Senate, Judiciary, every other servant in government, and their families, need us to bend the ear and heart of Heaven like never before.

Jesus revealed the source of maximum spiritual power when He told the disciples:

However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. Matthew 17:21

So He said to them, this kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29

Let’s turn on the power! And pray for wisdom, truth, protection from evil, and a mighty movement of God upon our leaders and our nation. Ask Him for the outpouring of His Holy Spirit upon every follower of Christ who has trusted Him for salvation… for revival, and renewed strength, to sweep this nation.

For we know what God has promised:

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people He has chosen for His inheritance. Psalm 33:12

If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and forgive their sin and HEAL THEIR LAND. 2 Chron 7:14

If anyone needs help knowing how to fast, please check out “How to Fast” on Faith and Fasting. Originally posted in May of 2016, it has been updated and reposted to assist anyone on National Day of Prayer this week.

God bless you all, and truly we ask… God bless America!

How Do We Save America?

Long before this blog began over a year ago, and many times since, I have found myself mourning, weeping, crying out to God for America. For some reason, He has pressed into my soul an urgent passion on behalf of what was (and in His eyes, I believe, still is) His country.

As a nation, we reflect Him less now than we did a century and a half ago, when writers like Herman Melville and Alexis de Tocqueville were declaring America distinctly and almost universally “Christian”.

But we still house the majority of God’s people, having the densest population of the followers of Christ/Messiah, Yeshua. So, the influx of non-believers, and the secularization of our culture and laws has still not changed the fact the most Christians in the world live in the U.S.! This land is God’s land, it was founded upon Biblical principles and the hope of religious freedom.

The blessings of being God’s land are obvious. Richest nation in the world, abundant resources, country that has most reached a helping hand to those in need and taken in the majority of the world’s refugees…

But we are slipping, are we not? Many ask why, and in my experience, many believers want to continually point fingers at non-believers. ‘It must be their fault, they come with their pagan ideas and worldly values and are voting out our laws which were based upon God’s Word.’

Maybe that is a little of it. But the greater truth we do not want to face is, churches and people who also call themselves Christian have allowed their teaching and values to become severely diluted with the world’s values. Christian pastors and priests, and parishioners have allowed their churches’ teachings to stray far from the Word of God!

This past Sunday, I attended a service where the speaker did little more than give a speech worthy of a social/political rally instead of a message for God’s people in His house. To be honest, it smacked of rebellion, and I did not hear the name of Jesus except at the end of one prayer. I was more than appalled, and found myself doing spiritual warfare praying during the service, going so far as to rebuke a spirit of revolution that is spreading in our land like a wildfire from hell!

My precious friends and co-believers in Christ, remember the words of Jesus when He said in Matthew: “If your enemy compels you to go with him one mile (carrying his load), go with him two.” (Matt 5:41)

The message of Christ in the New Testament is peace and humble service, not rebellion and revolution! The people of God do not need to ‘rise up’, they need to fall upon their knees in repentance to the Lord, fasting and prayer!

When ministers stand up and teach the whole truth in the Word of God, and we as believers respond and become clean, surrendered to the Lord and filled with His Holy Spirit… then we will be ready to move forward as a mighty army, NOT to war, but to LOVE the non-believing world as Christ loved us. And then, maybe then, who knows what God might do in our land?

JOEL 2:12 “Therefore also now, says the LORD, turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: 13 And tear your heart, and not your clothing, and turn to the LORD your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and may change His mind on judgment. 14 Who knows if He will change His course, and leave a blessing instead?

15 Blow the trumpet in the land of God’s people, observe a holy fast, call a solemn assembly: 16 Gather the people, call out the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and babies; let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. 17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep and let them say, Spare Your people, O LORD, and give not Your heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: saying in the midst of the people, ‘Where is their God’?

18 Then will the LORD be jealous for His land, and pity His people.”

Divine Intervention in Election?

[Note: Regardless our personal political leanings, I believe God is able to intervene in the selection of leaders, and in their decisions. At other times He allows us to reap what we have sown. Having said this, there was evidence of His intervention in the American election last November… and thus, this post is for your consideration. No matter your feelings about President Trump, as Christians, we MUST pray for him. We have no excuses to complain if we are not praying for our leaders.]

A conversation with my Aunt yesterday went something like this:

Her: I knew Trump would win all along. I never doubted it. Me: I knew Clinton would win, unless divine intervention changed the outcome. I think we saw divine intervention. So many were praying and fasting for this election to be directed by the hand of God.

I believe with all my heart God changed the course of history this week in response to the prayers and fasting of His children.

Did you know Christians in Jerusalem were praying and fasting for us in what they called the Jerusalem Global Gathering? They prayed ‘like never before for a just God to deliver His most Christian nation.’ (see article link below)

A Daystar broadcast, also streaming live on the internet, had a potential audience of 400 million viewers. In that broadcast, former Rep. Michele Bachmann, led a moment of prayer for the election. The very moment she prayed, election graphs later revealed became the precise moment the results turned and broke in favor of Trump.

Don’t miss this article, it will inspire your faith and belief in the power of prayer and fasting!

Pray for Peace

Friends of Faith and Fasting, please continue praying for America as we prepare to begin a new chapter.

I believe the most important thing we can do today and in coming weeks is to ask the Lord for peace in our land.

The election was stunning to all, no matter your choice. Some are celebrating. Some are shocked and angry or hurt. Respect each other. Allow those hurting to feel what they feel, and those celebrating give the same courtesy. We can walk the high road together.

I would urge all of us to pray, in Jesus’ name and calling down His power, to prevent violence from spilling over into the streets. Violence gains nothing. It only fans the flames of fear and further divides our country.

Ask the Lord to bind the unseen hands that are encouraging and stirring up division and hostility. Prevent the destruction of rage and violence, Lord, in Jesus’ name!

This is only the beginning of ‘fasting for America’. Let’s nurture this seed of change and see how vast a movement He will grow. Watch our great God take our faith and sacrifice and unleash all of Heaven into our land and world! He is our hope!.

God bless you, and God bless America!

Fasting Changes God’s Mind

Update (11/11): The below was published Nov 8 on Faith and Fasting hours before the election returns began…

[This post was originally published on April 26, 2016. It seems important today.]

Most of us are familiar with the story of Jonah and the whale. You remember, how Jonah didn’t want to do what God asked of him, so God sent along a large fish to swallow Jonah and carry him to the very place he didn’t want to go. Of course, he spent three days and nights in the belly of the fish where he got his heart right first.

That’s the story most of us were taught as children in Sunday School. But there is another miracle in the story we probably don’t remember as easily, maybe an even bigger one than a large fish swallowing a human who lived to tell the tale!

It is the miracle of fasting, accompanied by prayer and repentance. And how this powerful combination of sincere spiritual submission changed God’s mind!

Recall, the reason God wanted Jonah to go to Ninevah in the first place was to warn them His judgment was coming. He had gotten sick of their rebellious ways and was giving them, well, 40 days by the time Jonah finally got there. Only 40 days till disaster.

When Ninevah got this warning from Jonah, the second miracle happened. They believed him. And they repented, began fasting and praying! All the way up to the King, all the way down to the least of the kingdom believed and repented, fasted and prayed!

Then there was a third miracle: God changed His mind! He spared them and did not bring the disaster to their shores.

Friends, the power of getting right with God is huge. There is nothing like total submission and letting God know you are serious, that you will even deny yourself pleasure and risk a little discomfort to seek Him, to be right with Him.

Today, let’s learn from the whole story of Jonah and Ninevah. American children of God, we’ve been warned by precious saints like Rabbi Jonathan Cahn in his profound book, The Harbinger. A time of judgment is headed our way. Surely it is already touching our shores as the edge of a hurricane.

The time is now to repent, FAST and pray for our nation.

God bless you, and God bless America!

Jonah:

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Jonah 3  English Standard Version (ESV)

[Do not fast if you have health issues that prevent it. If unsure, consult a doctor before fasting.]
